On October 10 & 17 from 12 PM – 1:30 PM, join Hannah Lasorsa for Root Cellar Remedies: Revolutionary War Medicine at Burnside. This program focuses on horseradish, dug fresh from Burnside’s medicinal herb garden as the growing season closes. In the 18th century, the root was valued as medicine as much as seasoning, used to guard against scurvy and ease coughs and rheumatic pain, making it a staple in both household medicine chests and army camps.

The demo walks through harvesting and preparing the root for medicine, much as it would have been handled roughly 250 years ago. It closes with a talk on putting the garden to bed for winter, covering the same season-closing techniques colonial growers relied on to protect their beds through the cold months.
