Gorgeous Discontent Show Description

Come experience the Gorgeous Discontent exhibition by Lydia Panas at the Kemerer Museum of Decorative Arts.
The flowers in these still-life photographs draw on the formal qualities of the Dutch Golden Age. Gathered from my garden, dahlias and other blossoms are suspended against dark backgrounds. They mingle throughout the scenes, floating, falling, and weaving in various stages of bloom, hovering between growth and decline, darkness and light. Reflecting on time beauty, and decay, I hope that the photographs will invite viewers to approach them with a sense of curiosity and self-reflection.
About the Artist
Lydia Panas is a visual artist working with photography and video. A first-generation American, she was raised between Greece and the United States. Panas’ work looks at identity and what lies below the surface, investigating questions of who we are and what we want to become. Panas’ work has been exhibited, both in the US and internationally, in places such as at the Brooklyn Museum, Michener Art Museum, and Zendai MoMA Shanghai, and more. Her work has appeared in the The New Yorker, the New York Times, Popular Photography, amongst others.
