We are delighted to announce the completion of the comprehensive restoration of the Single Sisters' House, one of the most significant structures in Bethlehem's Moravian settlement. After two years of meticulous work, this 1744 landmark has been returned to its original appearance.
Restoration Highlights
The $2.3 million project addressed critical preservation needs:
- Complete roof replacement using period-appropriate materials
- Restoration of original window sashes and glazing
- Repointing of historic masonry
- Interior plaster repair and paint analysis
- Climate control system installation for artifact preservation
Historical Significance
The Single Sisters' House served as home and workplace for unmarried women in the early Moravian community. These women were skilled artisans, educators, and musicians who played vital roles in colonial Bethlehem's success.
The restored building will reopen to visitors in February with new interpretive exhibits telling the stories of the remarkable women who lived and worked within its walls.
